Yoga Nidra—known as yogic sleep—is a meditation and conscious relaxation practice that is intended to induce total physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. It is said that one (1) hour of yoga nidra can be as restorative as four (4) hours of regular sleep.

The modern style of yoga nidra was developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, a disciple of Swami Sri Sivananda Saraswati, in the 1940s. It has roots in ancient tantric practices. Using a very specific script and methodological process, yoga nidra works by creating profound relaxation through establishing sense withdrawal (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), and meditation (dhyana). Relaxation first occurs in this process through turning your attention inward. It almost feels like a sort of hypnosis, but it is said that the mind reaches a state that is beyond hypnosis. In this hypnotic-like state, the mind is highly influenceable, but it actually remains more awake compared to hypnosis, which creates a deep sleep.

When taking the class online, you are encouraged to have any 'comfort' items near that you might use such as blankets, pillows, cushions or bolsters as this is a supremely comfy and relaxing practice.
